Closed Captioning

CaptionSync by AST was developed more than ten years ago, in collaboration with a team of expert advisers from higher education and with funding from a Small Business Innovation Research grant from the U.S. Department of Education.  Today AST’s CaptionSync service is the most cost-efficient, high quality, transcription and automatic captioning service available.

Closed captioning displays the audio portion of a television program as text on the TV screen, providing a critical link to news, entertainment and information for individuals who are deaf or hard-of-hearing. Congress requires video programming distributors (VPDs) - cable operators, broadcasters, satellite distributors and other multi-channel video programming distributors - to close caption their TV programs.

I’ve been a realtime stenocaptioner since 1992, focusing primarily on TV sports captioning, and I do a lot of local government meetings as well. I currently do freelance work for several captioning firms, and also perform CART services for meetings and conferences.

Before going fully freelance, I worked for nine years for Bay Area Captioning and VITAC, one of the largest captioning firms in the U.S., for whom I captioned news and sports, including KRON-TV in San Francisco. Before that, I owned Mission Peak Captioning, which captioned City Council, School Board, and Planning Commission meetings for Fremont, California. Stories about my captioning have appeared inFortune magazine, the Journal of Court Reporting, the San Jose Mercury News (front page!), the Valley Times, and other publications.

At Video Caption Corporation, we provide high quality English, Spanish and French closed captioning, and multi-language subtitling services for video and DVDs. We close caption and subtitle video in standard and high definition formats, as well as for the Internet. With offices in New York and Burbank, California, our friendly and knowledgeable staff will get your captioning or subtitling project done on time and within budget.

Our clients include broadcasters, corporations, independent producers, post houses, schools, libraries, churches and government agencies. Wherever there is a need for quality captioning or subtitling, we are there to meet it.
